Ongoing Activities

 Carbondale Hosting Summer Concerts!!

  Schedule:  Sunday, August 17 at 2pm featuring the music of George Tarasek and the Polka Partners Orchestra at the soon to be completed Pioneer City Train Station at the intersection of Trinity Place and Mill Street.  This concert will coincide with the rededication of the Train Station at 1:30pm.  In addition, The Polka Concert will officially kick-off this year's Pioneer Nights Block Party which will be held around City Hall in Carbondale Wednesday, August 20 through Saturday, August 23.       

Volunteer Opportunities- The Lackawanna Branch of the Pennsylvania Association for the Blind is in need of volunteers.  Their radio reading service needs people to read newspapers and magazines from their studios in downtown Scranton.  They also need people to help out in their radio station's control room.  In addition, they are looking for people to help in their creative crafts center.  If you would like more information on these volunteer opportunities call 342-7613-Monday through Friday between 8:30am and 4pm. 

Extra Help-Medicare Recipients can get help through the Social Security Administration that helps to pay the cost of Part D prescription plan premiums and co-pays.  For further questions about the Extra Help Program at the Voluntary Action Center: 570-347-5616.

Drug Free Pennsylvania in collaboration with the Partnership for a Drug Free Pennsylvania want parents to be aware of the dangers of medications and other products that children are abusing!  Every day 2700 Teens try a prescription medicine to get high for the first time.  Last year more teens intentionally abused cough medicine and prescription painkillers than ecstasy, meth and heroin combined!  62% of teens say it's easy to swipe prescription pain relievers from their home medicine cabinet.  For more information go to www.drugfreepa.org .

8th Annual Greyhound Golf Classic-First Friday Of Each Month!   ( September 5, October 3, November 7 and December 5) All proceeds from the tournament benefit Rainbow's End Greyhound Rescue, an organization that helps ex-racing greyhounds find a permanent home with a loving family.  Format is Captain and Crew.  Price is $65 per person and includes 18 holes of golf with a riding cart, refreshments and registration beginning at 8am. Shredding Truck in Moscow-The Shredding truck will be in front of City hall the first Friday of each month from 9am to 10am.  Local residents and businesses are welcome to bring documents for shredding.  Customers should have exact change or check made payable to Shred-All Company.  Shredding dates are: September 5, October 3, November 7, and December 5, 2008.  For more information: 842-8980. 

Pasta for Pennies!  Area Students are collecting spare change for Olive Garden's 14th Annual Pasta for Pennies Program which benefits The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Proceeds fund cancer research and services for patients and their families.  The class that raises the most money in each school receives a pasta party from Olive Garden.  The program is taking place in the following counties: Lackawanna, Luzerne, Lehigh, Berks, Bucks, Montgomery, and Philadelphia.   Last year a record-breaking $5.2 million was raised for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.   For more details call 610-521-8274 or visit www.lls.org .

Sergeant Jan Argonish Ride set for Sunday, September 14!  Sgt. Argonish was killed on August 27, 2007 during an ambush in Afghanistan.  He was 26.  Jan served in the Pennsylvania National Guard for 10 years.  This was his third deployment.  Jan was an amazing person who loved his son Jakub, his family, friends, and fiance Talia.  Jan loved to go riding with his son, country music, and classic cars.  Jan is loved and missed dearly by all who knew him.  The ride will start and end at The Milestone Ranch, Route 632, Waverly.  Rain or Shine!  Registration: 8am to 11am with the ride starting at noon.  Registration Fee: $ 20-rider and $10-passenger.  All motorcycles and cars are welcome.  There will be food, drinks, and entertainment.  (Vibe, Bliss, and The Collective) Begins at 2pm at The Milestone Ranch following the ride.  Giveaways and Raffles!  For more information go to www.sgtjanargonish.webs.com .
